Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor and the Laboratory Director, the Generalist performs all laboratory procedures in a prompt, accurate and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. This position supports the short and long-term goals and values of the department. Specifically in following the department’s policies and procedures relating to quality assurance, education, proficiency testing, competency, hazardous waste management, safety, physician testing services, laboratory information system, quality control, cost containment and other laboratory functions which assure continuous performance improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Documents results of laboratory tests in work logs according to department protocol
Ensures that supplies are available and notifies appropriate personnel when inventory is low. Rotates stock to minimize outdated supplies
Exercises professional judgment in evaluation of specimen integrity as it affects results accuracy and takes corrective action as necessary. Such action includes specimen rejection, recollection and/or retesting using the same or alternate methods and/or utilizing other skills associated with the practice of clinical laboratory science to ensure valid and accurate testing
Maintains department turn-around-times for ER, ICU, OB, timed draws, and STAT testing
Notifies supervisor of any testing and/or reporting errors as quickly as possible, sending corrected report to all areas receiving incorrect data noting the report is a “corrected report” according to established policies and procedures
Oversees the work of the Laboratory Assistants - Phlebotomists and trainees as assigned
Participates in departmental competency program in a timely manner
Performs and documents QC, maintenance and patient testing on all instruments and manual testing in department sections assigned according to established department policies and procedures
Possesses sufficient academic, technical and clinical skills and knowledge to evaluate, troubleshoot, research and resolve day-to-day problems that arise and operate any instrumentation or do manual testing after orientation and training
Provides technical assistance to Laboratory Assistants - Phlebotomist in order to resolve patient order problems
Reviews all patient test data before verifying, noting instrument error codes, data inconsistent with age and/or diagnosis and resolves problems, and consulting a supervisor as needed
Uses personal protective equipment as required by Infection Control Department and Safety Department policies
Qualifications
Basic computer competence including data entry utilizing menu-based programs
Licensure by the California Department of Health Services as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist required
Minimum of one-year experience in acute care hospital preferred
Registration with one of the national registries associated with laboratory practice as a generalist or specialist preferred
