This unique position combines clinical laboratory duties with client contact at a small non-profit sperm bank dedicated to providing ethical family building options. Experienced Med Techs with good communication skills interested in a management opportunity in a small lab are encouraged to apply. The position of Lab Director is a regular, full-time (32-40 hours/week negotiable) position with benefits.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent and current valid California CLS license is required. 
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a clinical laboratory, experience in reproductive science and/or andrology preferred but not required.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with blood draws.
  • A strong knowledge base in Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
  • Experienced in CLIA regulations and policies, prior lab management experience and experience with inspections is desirable.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding reproductive tissue banking is a plus.

Skills:
  • General lab skills including use of light microscope and centrifuge, accuracy in labeling and measuring, lab documentation, and infection control techniques. Experience using a computer sperm analyzer (IVOS) is desirable. 
  • Able to work meticulously with detail and manage daily lab operations with high emphasis on quality.
  • Ability to analyze and problem solve issues that impact lab operations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks while working independently and under time constraints. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with coworkers, non-laboratory personnel, reference labs, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to write/revise lab procedures and conduct crossover studies.
  • Computer proficiency for data entry, word processing, email, etc.
  • Supervisory and management experience highly desired.

Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to the following essential job functions:
  • Perform and/or oversee all lab activities including: semen analysis and cryopreservation of semen; post-thaw evaluation, monitoring and reporting, sperm washing; sperm preparation; sperm sample labeling and record keeping; drawing blood; opening and closing the lab; and maintaining lab equipment and ordering lab supplies. 
  • Supervise all lab workers including other lab techs and lab assistants (currently 1 assistant).
  • Maintain clinical laboratory licensing paperwork for multiple state and federal agencies. Responsible for ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations pertaining to reproductive tissue banks including meeting with inspectors.
  • Responsible for maintaining QA and QC program and records. Evaluate quality control of instruments and assays to assure accuracy of test results. Maintain documentation and logs for equipment maintenance. Responsible for proficiency testing.
  • Responsible for tracking of sperm donor screening and eligibility. Maintain professional relationships with sperm donors while communicating about program logistics, STD testing, and sample quality.
  • Discussion of lab results with clients and physicians. Provide information and education to clients.
  • Write and revise standard operating procedures as needed.
  • Research reproductive laboratory techniques and processes.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory related incidents.
  • Computer data entry and analysis.

Physical Requirements:
  • Requires the ability to stand at a workstation counter doing repetitive tasks (processing samples, performing sperm counts and data entry) for extended periods of time over an 8 hour workday.
  • Requires ability to use a computer workstation, including keyboard and visual display terminal, for extended periods of time over an 8 hour workday. 
  • Requires ability to sit or stand as needed up to 8 hours per day with intermittent walking and bending. 
  • Requires the ability to see clearly and use a microscope for sample analysis.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry equipment and parcels weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires ability to complete detailed tasks in an environment where interruptions occur. 
  • Requires working with liquid nitrogen (hazardous materials handling training will be provided).
