Sperm Bank of California - Berkeley - Experienced CLS and/or non-management CLS

I am the Executive Director of The Sperm Bank of California, a small non-profit reproductive tissue bank in downtown Berkeley.  Our Lab Director is leaving and we are currently looking for a CA licensed CLS for our lab.   Ideally we would hire an experienced CLS into this same full-time working manager position but we are also looking at the option of hiring a part-time Lab Director and a non-management CLS position.

Does your program have a job board or other means to distribute this information?  This is a unique position and we are seeking someone with lab skills who is also drawn by the mission of our organization.  I have attached the link to our posting on monster.com below.  Please forward this email to anyone you know who might be interested.

Thank you for your help and time.

Regards,

Alice Ruby, MPH, MPPM

CLS - Redwood City

About Counsyl's Genome Center
Over the last few years, we've grown from a dorm room startup to become one of the largest clinical genome centers in the world. Our test is now prescribed by physicians for more than 1% of all births in the United States.
As you might imagine, few if any have done multiplex testing on quite this scale before. Our genome center group scales our clinical laboratory to handle massive sample volume while maintaining diagnostic-grade quality. We are a mix of experienced laboratory staff and research scientists, comprising Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS), ABMG-certified Laboratory Directors, and PhD graduates of Stanford, Harvard, and MIT.
About you
You should have a BS, MS, or PhD in Molecular Biology (or equivalent), or significant independent bench experience as demonstrated by publications, competitions like iGEM, or prior employment.
  • CLS positions additionally require a current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Clinical Genetics Molecular Biologist Scientist (CGMBS) license.
As a scientist at Counsyl, you will work hands-on in our highly automated clinical genomics facility on one or more of the following areas:
  • Production Diagnostic: own all aspects of processing clinical samples to produce results for physicians and patients

  • Protocol Design: design, validate, and optimize clinical genomic assays for rare Mendelian variants

  • Protocol Automation: scale, automate, and tune our protocols with robotics and microfluidics to handle large and growing sample volumes

  • Biomedical Curation: use internal tools to turn unstructured biomedical literature into clean data structures suitable for a production diagnostic

  • QA/RA:  prepare and maintain a host of regulatory documents, using internal apps to automate and streamline the process

  • Supply Chain: use operations research to ensure that our reagent and component stocks meet exponentially growing demand

  • Manuscript Authoring: conceive, write, and submit academic papers in collaboration with researchers at Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Yale
You should ideally have familiarity with the following:
  • Basic Molecular Biology: Pipetting and multi-channel pipetting, PCR, qPCR, DNA Extraction, DNA Quantification

  • Sequencing: library prep and operation of Illumina GA-IIx, Illumina HiSeq, or Ion PGM

  • Biological Databases: NCBI, UCSC, 1000 Genomes, Hapmap, UK10K

  • Computers: you should be extremely quantitative and computer-savvy for a molecular biologist or laboratory scientist.
That said, we're mainly looking for people with great hands who can figure out any protocol put in front of them, even with no prior experience doing clinical genotyping or sequencing. If that describes you, please do apply.
What you'll do
  • Run assays in a state-of-the-art clinical genomics laboratory
  • Develop new molecular diagnostics and optimize existing ones
  • Work closely with engineering to help handle our exponential growth in sample volume
  • Publish research manuscripts with our software team
  • Experience the rise of a startup from the inside
  • Save lives with every batch of samples
What you'll get
  • Competitive compensation and start-up equity package
  • Excellent health insurance
  • Catered meals every day plus a fully stocked fridge
