We are starting to advertise our vacancies this week- 6 CLS positions; VA still calls them medical technologists. Please feel free to spread the word:
The announcements say GS-10, which is a senior tech, BUT STUDENTS who have BS, NAACLS training program, certification (or will have very soon) can apply. If they are selected, they come in at the GS-7 level for one year, then GS-9 for a few years, then GS-10. Positions are:

Palo Alto Microbiology – Hematology 8am – 430 pm
Palo Alto Hematology – Blood Bank 8 am – 4:30 pm
Livermore Generalist 8 am – 4:30
Besides the salaries listed, medical technologists get 10% added on after 6 months.
GS-10 or GS-9 or GS-7 Medical Technologists (GS-7 level is for students just out of school, GS-9 at least 1 year experience, GS-10 is senor tech)
GS-10=$74,765 – 86,973, GS-9=$70,648), GS-7=$64,570 for one year, then they get promoted to GS-9)
GS-12 Microbiology Supervisor (she transferred to the QM/PI department) (GS-12=$82,273-$100,454)
GS-7 Medical Technician in Microbiology- set up cultures, take care of sendouts ($45,923- $57,704)
The multiple vacancies are due to a hiring freeze last year that built up, internal transfers and now we can finally hire !
There was one vacancy due to transfer to another VA (husband transferred), another due to tech accepted job at UCSF for higher pay.
For the most part, staff have worked here a long time.
I will be on vacation and back on Oct 1 if anyone has questions. Vacancies will be advertised thru Oct 8.
