Position Title: Clinical Laboratory Scientist I
Location: Southern Orange County, CA

Requirements

A Bachelors of Science degree in medical technology or biological sciences from an accredited college or university.

A current California state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license to perform laboratory testing.

Zero to three year's direct experience in a laboratory setting

Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills such as word processing, statistical analysis, and laboratory information system.

Functions/Duties:
  • Independently performs consistently moderate and somewhat complex clinical tests.  Exhibits skills and proficiency in applying technical principles and techniques of medical technology.
  • Prepares and tests new reagents or controls and evaluates their usefulness based on standard criteria.
  • Performs test calibrations and runs Quality Control material at appropriate intervals.
  • Determines the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria in testing procedures.
  • Determines calculated results utilizing testing data by means of manual or computerized procedures.
  • Accurately enters results of testing.  Checks the computer review reports to monitor accurate reporting of laboratory results.
  • Evaluates the acceptability of routine analysis prior to releasing patient reports.  Takes appropriate action in response to critical values or unusual or unexpected results, and documents action taken.
  • Responsible for performing preventative maintenance and/or calibration of laboratory equipment and properly documenting actions taken based on approved schedule.
  • Evaluates the results of instrument performance checks. Performs linearity, accuracy and precision checks as required.
  • Performs Q/C and calibrations with the appropriate frequency and evaluates results, to decide whether tests should be reported. Reports any shifts or trends to a Clinical Laboratory Scientist II or Supervisor.
  • Accurately performs and records proficiency testing.
  • Recognizes problems, and initiates troubleshooting steps to evaluate testing failures and other problems, if necessary. Notifies the supervisor, and contacts manufacturer for additional assistance or field service support, if required.
  • Monitors and maintains a consistent supply of reagents and consumables.
  • Promptly and courteously answers the phone and assists clients and other departments.
  • Maintains a safe and neat work area.
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with co-workers.
  • Provides on-going technical guidance to laboratory assistants, laboratory associates, and other Clinical Laboratory Scientists. Instructs and/or trains new employees in the proper performance of routine procedures.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through continuing education activities.
  • Follows established company and department policies and procedures.  Follows the guidelines for safety, environmental, and infection control.
  • Demonstrates a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Provides direct and constant supervision to unlicensed staff as necessary.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical/clinical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

5+ to 7 years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist

CLS Position - Orange County




CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST
Simply Biotech specializes in recruiting exclusively for the biotech community. We are currently seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientist for a leading and growing Orange County firm.

The CLS will be responsible for participating in the microarray diagnostics performed by the laboratory. The selected candidate will be knowledgeable in all techniques involving DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, RT-PCR reactions, DNA sequencing and other molecular genetic techniques. The CLS will also:
* Be familiar with microarray technology including labeling RNA, hybridizing, washing and scanning microarrays
* Preferably be knowledgeable with FISH techniques
* Perform diagnostic laboratory activities based on SOPs
* Contribute to writing and adjusting SOPs
* Consult with Senior CLS regarding daily work flow and troubleshooting
* Perform all aspects of laboratory procedures following safety guidelines and adhering to protocols in line with the company’s health and safety policies and procedures
* Maintain a filing system for completed patient data
* Register results in the lab journal and LIMS

The qualified CLS will possess the following qualifications:
* BS/BA degree
* Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) License required OR a Limited Molecular License
* 1-3+ years of experience
* Experience with molecular diagnostics techniques and histology techniques
* Experience with databases, microarray analysis, working with quality systems and lab automation and statistical analysis and/or software


 The right person should have strong PCR/DNA experience and a CLS license.

CLS - Palo Alto VA Hospital


We are starting to advertise our vacancies this week- 6 CLS positions; VA still calls them medical technologists.  Please feel free to spread the word:

The announcements say GS-10, which is a senior tech, BUT STUDENTS who have BS, NAACLS training program, certification (or will have very soon) can apply.   If they are selected, they come in at the GS-7 level for one year, then GS-9 for a few years, then GS-10.       Positions are:
                Palo Alto              Evening Shift  4pm – midnight  (2 positions)
                Palo Alto              3 Evenings Wed, Thur, Fri (4pm-mid), 2 Midnights Sat/Sun (mid-8am)
                Palo Alto              Microbiology – Hematology  8am – 430 pm
                Palo Alto              Hematology – Blood Bank   8 am – 4:30 pm
                Livermore           Generalist  8 am – 4:30

Besides the salaries listed, medical technologists get 10% added on after 6 months.
GS-10 or GS-9 or GS-7 Medical Technologists (GS-7 level is for students just out of school, GS-9 at least 1 year experience, GS-10 is senor tech)
GS-10=$74,765 – 86,973,   GS-9=$70,648),   GS-7=$64,570 for one year, then they get promoted to GS-9)


GS-12 Microbiology Supervisor (she transferred to the QM/PI department) (GS-12=$82,273-$100,454)


GS-7 Medical Technician in Microbiology- set up cultures, take care of sendouts ($45,923- $57,704)


The multiple vacancies are due to a hiring freeze last year that built up, internal transfers and now we can finally hire !
There was one vacancy due to transfer to another VA (husband transferred), another due to tech accepted job at UCSF for higher pay. 
For the most part, staff have worked here a long time.
