Perform all aspects of genetic testing such as DNA extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing, identification of abnormal results, reporting test results, improving techniques and development of new procedures.
The Technologist will also maintain laboratory records, and contribute to general laboratory maintenance and validation as well as assist fellow technologist and train students.
Specifics:
- Extract DNA or RNA from different biological samples ranging from blood, tissue, and saliva.
- Quantification of DNA via spectrophotometer/fluorimeter Perform PCR and all aspects relating to amplification such as PCR reactions, purification, quantification and isolation of a specific fragment, electrophoresis gels, and image capture and data storage.
- Perform all steps involved in DNA sequencing such as library preparation, DNA fragment purification, amplification, operating the DNA sequencer, troubleshooting and maintenance of DNA sequencer and report DNA results accurately.
- Understanding of CA, NYS, and CAP laboratory guidelines.
- Maintain records in notebook, equipment logs, test run logs, and other related sources of documentation.
- Order supplies and maintain constant stock of reagents and consumables.
- Perform routine validation tests on equipment and new lots of reagents.
- Prepare aliquots of reagents and make stock solutions. Report problems concerning individual cases, tests, equipment and supplies to the laboratory supervisor
- Train new students and new employees
- Perform various housekeeping and/or maintenance tasks to keep laboratory and equipment in clean and operable condition.
- Clean lab benches and work areas, replenish supplies. Report any malfunctions to the supervisor Performs other related duties as assigned.
High complexity lab test experience is a plus.
May need to work some weekends.
