Summary Performs routine semen banking procedures by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Maintains demonstrated proficiency with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures.
- Performs semen analysis, intrauterine (IUI) and intracervical (ICI) insemination semen preparation, post-thaw analysis, leucoscreen testing and morphology assessment.
- Performs routine cryogenic procedures including tank checks, vial transfers, quality control checks
- (verifying vial labels and number/type of vials), preparing dry shippers, processing client vial pickup and returns.
- Prepares blood and urine specimens for transport to the reference laboratory.
- Conducts and accurately records all required quality control checks; takes corrective action as needed.
- Communicates any errors, accidents or incidents to the Branch/Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Supervisor.
- Performs routine cleaning of laboratory equipment.
- Complies with all regulatory, quality assurance, quality control, standard operating, and safety procedures.
- Participates in proficiency and competency assessments.
- Participates in the review of standard operating procedures.
- Prepares media and performs parallel testing as required.
- Assists with lab supply maintenance.
- Performs opening and closing duties.
- Provides back-up coverage for donor desk as needed.
- May perform phlebotomy.
- Other duties and projects as required.

Description:
The Clinical Laboratory Technologist I works under general supervision and is responsible for complex laboratory procedures and handling all types of specimens submitted to the department for processing tasks assigned. This is the entry level in Technologist job category. Employees in this position perform a full range of Laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures.
Job Responsibilities
· Performs clinical laboratory tests proficiently in the department under general supervision, and exercises independent judgment in the specialty assigned
· Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintains accurate and complete records of all testing performed on-site
· Maintains records that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
· Determines the acceptability of specimens for testing, prepares clinical specimens for testing and identifies specimen related problems according to established SOP guidelines.
· Analyzes specimens using approved testing procedures (see department SOP’s)
· Reviews, releases test results and follows department’s procedure in reporting STATS or Critical results to the interpreting physician per department SOP
· Performs and documents Quality Control on reagents, equipment and assays. Recognizes and acts on QC failures by consultation or follow-up with the department Supervisor or Lead technologist regarding courses of action taken to achieve resolution
· Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
· Assists the department in ensuring an efficient workflow operation by reporting existing problems, i.e. problems concerning individual cases, tests, equipment and supplies that may cause significant delay on the workflow process to the department Lead, Supervisor or Director
· Prepare stock solutions, reagents and cocktails used in the laboratory as per established SOP’s. Tests and evaluates them based on standard criteria and documents all observed results
· Ensures accurate tracking and labeling of reagents, solutions, and supplies
· Helps maintain acceptable productivity, TAT and workflow
· Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning, performing or scheduling equipment and instrument maintenance/calibration/ certification, as required
· Demonstrates initiative in making suggestions to improve efficiency and productivity and provides consistent feedback
· Attends monthly department and any additional training/educational meetings
- May assist in validation processes through documentation and development of procedural operations for new tests or new lots following manufacturer’s guidelines and/or established department SOP’s
- May be delegated the task of training other staff in proper performance of both routine and complex procedures and/or instruments
- May participate in reviewing training checklists to reflect current laboratory procedures
- Promptly and courteously answers the phone and assists clients and other departments with their inquiries.
- May serve as the Safety Officer
· Perform other duties as assigned by department Supervisor/Manager or Lead technologist
· Achieves desired level of competency and accuracy for the main department processes and responsibilities of assigned position, as defined in established SOP’s, within 6 months
· Meets or exceeds productivity expectations
· Reports quality results with limited errors
· Maintains satisfactory results on all department specific competency assessments
· Works productively and efficiently to achieve company and departmental goals
· Communicates effectively with all levels of staff

Job Requirements
· Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology from an accredited college or university preferred OR Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences with the addition of at least one year of laboratory experience/training/training course
· One to three years equivalent experience (high complexity testing) preferred
· Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Molecular License
